Hello,
I have an idea for a good novel or series of them brewing in my mind and I would like to know if yall could help me out. My main character, Ivan, starts out as a drunk man being chased by law enforcement. Setting is a time period where they have only recently invented gunpowder in a fictional coastal village in a fictional world. Ivan gets caught in an alley, where he would have been apprehended by the police but a gang of werewolves save his life. He being a wanderer himself wants to join them, but 1. he is not a werewolf, and 2. the leader of the werewolves tells him he can join only if he brings back a vampire's head. So, after searching a while, Ivan finds a ship with a crew who hunt vampires and things in the nearby islands. The story can go on with him on this hunting expedition, coming back, becoming a werewolf, and then doing something fantastic like liberating the country from an opressive government or defeating an oncoming surge of evil creatures bent on destroying everything.
My question is, I do not know much about sailing or ships, so can I make it believable if I just make things up? Also, if you've read the Edge Chronicles (kid books) the authors made regular ships flying through the air very believable. Could I copy that somehow or would that just be too easy to plagarize and sound dumb?
What else would anybody that loves fantasy, especially the dark, scary kind, want to see? Mainly as far as creatures and things like that go. I don't want to get deep into dark arts or anything like that but a wee bit is allowable.
Does anyone have any good ideas for what happens after he joins this gang? I would prefer not to have them rule the streets and be thugs, but rather have them do something for the greater good if you know what I mean. If he's going to become a werewolf, he has to be bitten by one, right?

First thing, yes, vampires and werewolves are common place, and they do war against each other. Humans would be the main dominating force in play here and they don't really deal with either one. Werewolves see themselves as protectors of the humans from the vampires and other things that the humans can't protect themselves from. I was picturing two kinds of vampires: one, more common one and smaller size of 6-7.5 feet with wings attatched to the arms and sides rather than out the back. they live in the dirtier coastal/island towns and can only blend in with humans if they wear big cloaks. They only go into civilized human towns for specific reasons. The others, darker, blacker, more evil huge ones completely from a different continent far south across the sea. They would be the evil force maybe.
The ones that I was picturing owning firearms are the werewolves who get it from the dwarves who manufacture them in the mountains. Okay, picture two continents, one north, one south, and a large sea separating them. There's a mountain range about midway through the northern continent and lots of islands off the coast on the south side. Farther south, across the sea is where the evil vampires live, and I think I will use your suggestions right here! The southern vampires could be the "legendary" "only spoken in a whisper" evilness that my good guys have to beat in the end. Also, I like the idea of having the werewolves and vampires becomin allies for their own survival as you put it. That can be the werewolves with the smaller, norther vampires that they normally fight.
Back to the firearms, most people (i.e. the humans who make the rules and are dominant) basically are still in the "midieval period" but dwarves in the northern mountains have been developing firearms to the point of pretty decent reliability: muskets, muzzle loaders, etc. They're black market items for big prices and that's what the werewolves buy and that's why the humans don't like the werewolves. 1. they're scary, and 2. they brake the law. And here, I'll take your great suggestion that the humans aren't familiar with "boom sticks" ie firearms and outlaw them, calling it a religious conspiracy. This gives me the chance to have magnificent midieval scenes with huge swords and horses and knights in armor, yet still get some good firepower.
How do you like where this is going?
As for Ivan, and his personal battles/struggles I'm not sure really what to do with him. He could be just a thief or something and that's why he's chased by the authorities in the first place. What do you think of this?--his family, wife and kids, were killed maybe ten years ago by the human government when it spread across and conquered his town. Since then, after escaping the attack, he moved a little south to the coastal islands and became a common street thief/thug, basically a worthless human being. Let's change the people chasing him from "police" to some vampires or just rough humans that he pickpocketed the meanest one. Now he's got a whole gang of ruthless vampires angry ready to kill him for stealing and that's when and why he gets saved from the werewolves at the beginning of the story. He thinks that this werewolf gang would be good for him to start making a difference in the world and do good things protecting people from evil, and that sets him off on the quest throughout the other islands to find a vampire, kill it, and bring it back. That could be a whole volume right there.

The premise for the stories / novels sounds interesting. Just the little summary you wrote makes me want to find out more. Why is Ivan being chased? Why is he a wanderer? Some dark secret that might only be uncovered as we go a long, some secret tragedy or epiphanal experience that led to his solitary existence? This man has a past and how much we know, get to know, and want to know can be fertile ground indeed. Did this past set his moral compass, or has he had a sea change of morality which his true morals rebel against internally?
You say gunpowder has just been discovered? If so how recently? Was it 10, 20, 50 or 100 Years ago? This period will have ramifications for the way battles are fought. What armour is worn and the eventual obsolescence of walled city’s and sieges. Whoever has this technology will perhaps be coming to sudden dominance, perhaps there is a new colonial empire sweeping all before them due to this? The time might be one of turmoil and conquest, maybe in the foreground or just in the background.
How reliable are the guns in your world? Are they primitive and dangerous or have they advanced to the stage of perhaps muskets in the Napoleonic wars era? Or perhaps guns are even more basic, resembling more the harquebus of the 1560-1600s heavy and cumbersome things, sometimes as dangerous to the operator as the target.
Are firearms in proliferation or are they rare? It could be they are viewed as some sort of sorcery. The men who wield them distrusted and feared as a practitioner of the dark arts. Maybe in your world a religion has been built round these terrible weapons. The gunmen preying to so some fey god. If they are unreliable and blow up in the hand often, perhaps before battle the soldiers pray to this dark god of the black powder to spare them and take their enemies instead.
Are the vampires and werewolf’s commonplace in this world? Are they underground and mythical creatures? Does one group have domination over the other making either the vampires or werewolf’s the hunted and oppressed? What’s their history? Do you have a secret mythology of why they are at war (assuming they are) a history of dark deeds and betrayals which need not be told, but merely alluded to in fragments. Gaining in detail and momentum as the story’s progresses. You don’t have to give much away at once, but it’s good to know yourself what this back history is for writing purposes.
You mention an oncoming surge of evil creatures destroying everything. Perhaps this is an ancient evil re awoken that the humans know nothing off, maybe a dark god or ancient demon and / or their minions. But the vampires and werewolf’s have fragments of in their deepest archives. Maybe this new threat is a game changer? Perhaps the two warring factions need to suddenly, reluctantly, join forces to just survive against it. Maybe they are responsible in some way for unleashing this force in some folly of the war. This thing, whatever it is, also need not be revealed immediately, but hinted to cryptically as the story unfolds. It may be the creeping doom in the background which slowly comes to the fore as the main plot unfolds. Hell we might not meet this new powerful evil for two books yet. But you might build the terror using old legends. Things that scare even vampires and werewolves are indeed scary!
You mention being worried about having little knowledge of, what I would assume to be sailing ships frigates, schooners, and full rigged ships. If the handling of these ships and authenticity of terms and details are important for flavour and / or story, then the only way to get this is read about them. Doing research on period facts and terminology’s is one of the best ways to make an otherwise fantastical story feel like it might have actually happened. We know that many of the facets of the story are farfetched, fantasy; but we still want the framework that it is couched in, to have a feeling of consistency and authenticity.
If you are going to tamper with the historically accurate terms and design of the ships in your world, you should have a clear understanding of the principles that they work on and what parts this entails. Perhaps they have a magical source of power to augment wind power? If so how is it fuelled? Is it replenishable? How is the power source housed and is it dangerous? The more you know about all this stuff the more it becomes easy to convince those who are reading, that you the author are just relating tales of a world that exists somewhere. In fantasy the suspension of disbelief is one of the most important things a writer can achieve. If your “set” if you will, is solidly built you are half way there.
So in brief, anything you don’t know, do a bit of research on. You don’t need to know a massive amount on the subject but know enough to be convincing in an offhand way. A little research goes a long way when it comes to giving a story real “feel”
Hopefully a few of these suggestions and questions will have given you some ideas and started you thinking. Your brief outline certainly got me thinking and I would look forward to see where this goes.
