Okay, this is something that I've been working on on and off for the past several years, but lately I've begun a very serious push to make it a real "world" which I could then use as a setting for whatever story catches my fancy. The thing is, creating an entire world essentially from scratch is no small feat, and so I'm hoping to find some help. This is what I've come up with so far (officially, there's a whole lot of stuff that I'm still mulling over); I also have an alphabet for one of the major languages (which I've also begun working on) as well as a full world map.

Anyway, I hope that you guys will be willing to help out and, with any luck, contribute :)

EDIT: I should add, feel free to ask me for any info you might want or need if you intend to contribute.

1/ Pre-Intaran Hiat

I – Early local civilization

Despite the major influx of foreign settlers, initially Bante but later mostly Saetian, Hiat maintained a strong autochthonous culture until long after Intara’s rise to prominence. The Kiteki, Eliati and Forenzians were all original inhabitants of the peninsula, and managed to resist external encroachment and thrive culturally. It is believed that the first cities in Hiat were founded around 5000 and 4000 BE, with Forenzia’s founding commonly dated at 4500 BE at the latest.

  • The Kiteki tribes were the first people to settle beyond the Arzican mountains, and it is believed that they were an early off-shoot of the larger group that later split into Eliat and Forenzia. It is safe to assume that their migration was done by coastal navigation, thus explaining their progressive spread from the Decian coast inland to the coast of the Alexian Sea.
  • The Forenzian tribes were most likely the first peoples outside of Sae and Canusia to found cities. The ruins of old Forenzia have provided historians with a wealth of information on early Forenzian civilization, as well as details concerning their close relation with their neighbors, the Eliati. Their origins remain a mystery, as they are clearly distinct from both the early Bante and Canusian civilization, which most theorize are the originators of most the continent’s early inhabitants [Eg: Basques].
  • Eliat remains one of the most mysterious cultures in Hiat, despite the vast amount of recorded history we have about them (recent evidence suggests that the Eliati were the first to develop a written language, which eventually spread to both Forenzia and Kiteki, indicating that these cultures remained in contact even after they had split). Unlike both the Kiteki and the Forenzians, Eliati culture turned inland instead of out towards the sea. This meant that they occupied vast amounts of territory at one point or another, stretching from the Forenz Bay to near present-day Milania.

II – The first Empires

                a) Eliat

As we saw previously, Eliat developed a sizable empire, generally dated between 5000 and 4000 BE (coinciding with the growth of cities). Using their chariots to deadly effect in the northern plains of the peninsula, they were able to extend their influence as far south as present day Milania and as far west as the Sipte Mountains. Under the leadership of Emses Ahadar (4233 – 4201 BE), the empire reached its greatest extent, managing to subjugate both the Forenzian and Kiteki tribes during his reign.

His successors however were unable to maintain the supremacy that Emses (later dubbed “The Conqueror” in Eliat mythology), and the Empire soon collapsed into warring factions, allowing the Kiteki and the Forenzians to spilt once more from the Eliat.

                b) Kiteki

After their conquest by the Eliat under Emses, the Kiteki’s thirst for growth was born. Initially a nation of seafarers, much like their distant cousins the Forenzians, under the Eliat, they learned to love the land, and from them they also learned the techniques of war that would allow them to create a powerful empire, stretching from present day’s Arzican Mountain range all the way south to the Maxinian straits, and it is now believed that they may have been the first peoples to conquer and colonize the Alexian Archipelago (evidence to support this have been found in Alexia Media, where traces of Kiteki settlement have been found along the island’s eastern coast; the presence of writing in Eliati however could point to an even earlier colonization under the Eliati empire). Again relying on their powerful chariots, they swept across the open plains of Intaer, subjugating the few cities that had been founded here.

Unlike the empire of Eliat, the Kiteki set up a ruthlessly efficient centralized empire, which gave it stability where Eliat had had none. As the centuries passed however, the vast bureaucracy needed to maintain the system became increasingly difficult to control from the capital of Eshas (Present day Hessas), and quickly gave rise to the more loosely united tribe that would eventually be conquered by the Intarans.

By the time of the arrival of the Saetian, around 3000 BE, after nearly 1000 years of continuous rule, the Kiteki Empire officially collapsed, the last emperor impaled upon the gate of his former capital. The bureaucrats became aristocrats, and the empire was divided amongst them.

                c) Bante (this is only for Bante culture in Hiat; larger Bante Culture is covered in its own chapter)

When speaking of early Hiat, it is impossible not to mention the Bante, the vast collection of migrant tribes that would all but conquer the continent. Sweeping in from the north around 3900 BE, the warlike Bante quickly swallowed up the ailing Eliat Empire, conquering its cities with little resistance. From their base in the former Eliat Empire, they continued much of the peninsula north of the Arzican mountain range, occupying the Sipte highlands and the Varinian plain as well as the Eliati plain.

A very warlike people, they readily adopted Eliati tactics and soon they ravaged much of the peninsula north of Arzica, as internecine fighting tore them apart. Despite internal conflicts, they remained a dangerous threat for their neighbors as well, and many ruins of early Forenzian settlements date from the arrival of the Bante, and it is theorized that Forenzia itself was only spared because of several rather fortuitous floods that made their capital inaccessible to the strictly land-based Bante hordes.

The most notable example of Bante culture is Sojei, a later Bante tribe that soon swept away their brethren as they drove through the last vestiges of civilization in the former Eliati empire outside of their former heartland: the cities of the Sipte highlands, fiercely independent and true masters of the art of fortification (examples of their prowess as masons and stone workers can be seen in the mighty forts they erected as well as the walls they built, all of which are essentially preserved as they were thousands of years ago). Led by the now-legendary Abda I, they conquered the oldest of these highland cities, which eventually took its name from the tribe, Sojei. With the conquest of this mighty city, the Sojei begin to truly distinguish themselves amongst the Bante, who had otherwise assimilated into Eliati culture, and create the first Bante kingdom on the peninsula.

                d) Sojei

The rise of the Sojei tribe from barbarian horde to formidable kingdom was a sudden one. Led by a mysterious figure, Abda I, they conquered their capital Sojei and from there they would build a mighty empire that would become a nominal successor to the Eliati Empire, covering much of its former territory within a few decades under Abda’s successors.

Characterized later on by their constant rivalry with Intara and Forenzia, early in their history they were the undisputed superpower of the peninsula. Their transition from barbarians to civilized was remarkably quick as well, which is fortunate, since their innovative adoption of Eliati script for use with their Bante language is the main source of historical records for the period (Interestingly, the arrival of the Saetians was noted in their history nearly as an afterthought: “A settlement has grown where previously there was none. Their language is foreign and strange and they are giants clad in grey, but they are few.”), and through them we’ve also manage to recover much early history of other prominent Bante tribes, such as the Yojei (before their mass migrations off the continent) and the Hojei.

The Sojei brought with them new ways of waging war, in particular the composite bow, a light but powerful weapon that was far superior to the Hiati bow that existed on the peninsula (which was both large and cumbersome, utilizing poor material), as well as the idea of infiltration, which was vital to their success in conquering Sojei city.

And so, by the time of the Saetian arrival, Hiat had already known several empires and was dominated by another, but 3000 BE with the founding of Intara marks a turning point in history which dramatically altered the balance of power on the peninsula.

III – Intara: Foundation and early culture

The arrival of the Intarans marks a turning point in Hiati history: they brought with them Saetian culture, which at the time was considerably more advanced in terms of metallurgy and government, a result of several millennia of constant warfare under a centralized government. With these advantages, the Saetian colonists were able to impose themselves effectively in what would eventually become Intara (the original site is upon the northern bank of the river Est, and not at Saeinter as many have long since assumed).

The first years of Saetian settlement are markedly different from the unique Intaran culture which would later develop, a result of the relative reluctance of the first settlers to intermingle with the locals. This is all the more understandable when we take into account the remarkable violence of southern Hiati culture in the wake of the Kiteki collapse,  which resulted in a plethora of warring cities, and as the various burned-out ruins of the period indicate,  these conflicts were rarely resolved peacefully.

However, this early strife did present the early settlers of Intara with a unique opportunity to expand their influence at the expense of their neighbors, and in a few decades, aided by increased amounts of colonists arriving from Saetian cities, the colony, now a city, had cemented its position in the region.

Ultimately, it was the abrupt halt to colonial activity caused by the collapse of the Saetian Empire which forced Intara, faced with no source of new citizens, to begin opening up the city to its neighbors. It is with this shift that Saetian Intara ends, and that the Intara that would come to dominate the continent is born.
