I like to think of demons in the battle of light and dark for the souls of humanity sense. Now, in talking about things in the astral plane sense you can treat Earth as a nexus of energies and the reason such a battle over souls would take place (or if nexus isn't the right word just a concentration of entities that can easily sway one way or the other,) but that frame of thinking is counter productive in a setting where humans are starting a manifest destiny exodus into space.
The astral entities would have to mearly follow (which works well enough for the sort of role the forces of light tend to take,) but this doesn't work very well as demons of this sort of largely stationary having themselves a particular analog of a shrine around which they have all their power concentarted (not in the Astral planes, just in the standard world,) or require summoning for that sort of presence at less defined locations.
...this is undesireable. They either lose their role as major entities by become tools for some group or other already in the world, lose their role as major entities by being reduced to something more like orcs that jsut periodically raid on a relatively equal footing in the ways or war...
or they're present in space the same way as one the ground but without any reason and taking scale into account they've kept most of their power out of the general fight.
So I'm trying to brainstorm demonic activities that make sense outside of the atmosphere (they could even be radically weaker without the presence of atmospheric pressure type air, there's a whole lot of space.)
So far the only decent thing I've come up with is diverting rocks that would sterilize the planet because they'd lose the spoils of war if that happened prematurely.
Possibly usable is the idea of aligning the planets and similar acts for strategic use but peky scale becomes an issue there.
So, anyone got ideas for how to make the world I want?

I'm not sure if this will help at all. I see it, not that Earth is a nexus or hub or anything, but rather as a concentration of souls ripe for corruption. The reason the demons come to Earth is for the souls.
When mankind leaves Earth to explore the stars the demons follow where they never went before, only because the souls they crave are there.
I've always thought a sci-fi/horror setting would be great.
